Overview
It's Meal Time started as a Google interaction design challenge in 2020, focused on how schools could influence students' food choices and help them build healthier habits.
Instead of treating the prompt as a generic food ordering app, I localized the problem to Japan, where school lunches are already highly structured, nutritionist-led, and deeply connected to education. Through research and interviews with a Japanese junior high school teacher, I found that the main opportunity was not simply giving students healthier food — it was helping students understand why one choice is healthier than another.
The result was a lightweight meal selection experience where students could choose lunch components, see nutrition points, collect badges, and build a stronger connection between classroom lessons and real food decisions.
In 2026, I revisited the original concept and rebuilt a vibe-coded version of the app as a working online prototype, turning an archived design exercise into a more tangible product experiment.

The challenge
Getting kids to commit to nutritious choices can lead to healthier long-term habits, but influencing food behavior is difficult. Children are shaped by family, school, media, peers, convenience, taste, and habit.
The original challenge asked for an experience where schools could influence students' food choices. I decided to explore it through the lens of Japanese schools, because food education in Japan is not treated as an isolated topic. School lunch is part of the educational system, and many schools already provide balanced meals planned by nutrition professionals.
That changed the direction of the project. The problem was not "How can we give students healthier food?" It became "How can we help students understand and remember why one food choice is healthier than another?"

The insight
Japanese school lunches are often well organized, nutritionally balanced, and managed by school staff or nutritionists. But that structure also creates a hidden gap: students receive healthy meals, but they are not always asked to make an active choice. Without choice, the learning moment can become passive.
A teacher I interviewed explained that students could learn about nutrition in class but still struggle to connect those lessons to real life. They might eat balanced meals at school, yet not remember why grilled fish, seasonal vegetables, or a particular protein choice matters once they are outside the school environment.
That became the core insight: students do not only need healthy meals, they need memorable decision moments that connect nutrition knowledge to personal choice.

Product idea
It's Meal Time gives students a simple way to choose their lunch before the school kitchen starts preparation.
The app breaks lunch selection into a short guided flow, where students choose meal components such as carbs, protein, and vegetables. Each option carries visible nutrition points, and seasonal or recommended items receive stronger emphasis.
The goal is not to turn lunch into a game for entertainment. It is to make nutrition easier to remember through repeated, low-friction choices. The student picks a meal, sees the points behind the choice, confirms the order, and gradually builds a history of selected meals and collected badges.
The school can manage available menus through a simple CMS, while parents can review patterns through a lightweight dashboard.

Design process
The project started by unpacking assumptions around children, school lunches, and nutrition behavior. I first separated the audience into broad age groups — elementary, junior high, and high school — because independence and food decision-making change significantly with age.
I then focused on junior high and high school students in Japan, where smartphone usage is common enough to make a mobile concept plausible, but the school environment still has enough structure to influence habits.
The research combined desk research, sketching, journey mapping, and interviews with a Japanese junior high school teacher. Early concepts were closer to a food delivery app, but that direction felt too complex and too commercial for a school context. The design moved toward a simpler, more guided experience — closer to a quick educational ritual than a marketplace.
The final concept included the student app, a parent-facing view, and a school-side CMS to support real operational needs.

Key experience principles
Make the choice simple — the selection flow needed to fit into a school morning, so the concept uses a short wizard that guides the student through the decision without overwhelming them, aiming to keep selection under 30 seconds.
Make nutrition visible — instead of hiding nutrition data behind complex charts, the app translates healthier or seasonal choices into visible points. The points are not a perfect medical score; they are a simple learning device that helps students associate food choices with nutritional value.
Make learning repeatable — badges, meal history, and small moments of feedback help students remember what they selected and why it mattered. The more students repeat the choice, the more nutrition becomes connected to memory.
Respect school operations — the product cannot work if it ignores the kitchen. The concept includes a selection cutoff time so staff can prepare portions before lunch, plus fallback thinking, because any digital system used in a school needs a safe default if the app fails or students cannot access it.
Include parents without depending on them — the parent dashboard gives visibility into children's meal patterns, but the core student experience still works even if parents do not actively use the app.

Main features

Live prototype — the original 2020 concept was revived as an online prototype using AI-assisted coding, making the idea easier to experience beyond static screens.

What I revisited in 2026
The original concept was created as a 5-day design challenge, with limited time for validation and implementation. Looking back, the core idea still felt interesting, but static screens were not enough to communicate the behavior loop.
So I rebuilt a version of the app as a live prototype using AI-assisted coding. This let me quickly transform an old UX concept into something interactive, testable, and easier to explain. It also reflects how my practice has evolved — from designing flows and screens, to building working product experiments faster with AI tools.

What I would improve today
Looking back, I would be more careful with the gamification model. Nutrition is sensitive. A point system can help students remember healthy choices, but it can also oversimplify food behavior if not designed carefully. Today, I would frame points less as a score and more as a learning signal.
I would also validate the concept more deeply with school staff, nutritionists, parents, and students. The operational side is critical — a product like this can only work if it fits kitchen timing, budget constraints, allergy management, student access, and school policies.
I would design stronger non-smartphone alternatives, such as classroom tablets, shared terminals, printable cards, or teacher-supported selection methods.
The main evolution: less reward chasing, more reflection. The system should not teach students to maximize points blindly. It should help them understand balance, variety, seasonality, and personal responsibility.

Why this project still matters
It's Meal Time is not a launched product, and it was never meant to be one. Its value is in the thinking.
The project shows how a broad prompt can become a culturally specific product idea, how research can reframe the problem, and how a simple interface can support a larger system involving students, parents, schools, kitchens, and nutrition education.
It also shows how older design concepts can be revived through AI-assisted prototyping, giving past ideas a second life as interactive experiments.
For me, this project sits between design challenge, cultural research, behavior design, and product experimentation. It is a small project, but it captures a design approach I still care about — understanding the system before designing the screen.
One addition in the 2026 version: I built a small mini game into the prototype — a light, playful layer on top of the original concept, and a way to push the AI-assisted build a little further.
